No brief, this one is mine.

Over the course of three years, I lived in Johannesburg, South Africa. During that time, I travelled across most of Southern Africa, doing my thing behind the camera.

After a few intense years living in Johannesburg and working closely with vulnerable communities, things began to weigh heavily. It wasn’t just the day-to-day reality, but the emotional fatigue that sneaks up on you and slowly chips away. I needed something that grounded me. Something to channel the mental noise and reconnect me to what mattered.

On top of that, I had a growing urge to create something physical. I wanted to produce a body of work that brought together my photography and design in a meaningful way. A piece that didn’t sugar-coat anything but still found beauty in the grit.

Insights

I created Africa, a black-and-white photography book made up of images I captured across South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia and Botswana over three years. This book is a confrontation with the wild, with stillness, and with self.

Design-wise, I kept things stripped back. The layout uses space generously, giving the photos and words a chance to speak without shouting. The cover features subtle spot UV text which catches the light only when it wants to,  a small nod to how nature often reveals itself in quiet, fleeting moments.

Throughout the book, I paired imagery with short reflections. Some are introspective, some a little funny. There’s a lot you can learn watching elephants, and sometimes wildebeest just look ridiculous. I didn’t want the writing to be lofty or poetic for the sake of it. This was about honesty. It was about capturing the awe, the absurdity and the unexpected clarity that comes from watching the world do its thing, without your interference.

She will be for sale again soon, my previous web host deleted my shop so I have to rebuild 🙂
